Acetylene: what to confirm before selection
Acetylene valves are recorded differently from the rest of the catalogue, and the differences are the things worth confirming before anyone quotes.
ANYI's factory record holds six acetylene models. Read their rows next to the rest of the catalogue and one thing stands out immediately: the working pressures do not look like the others. Where most media are recorded at 15MPa and above, the acetylene rows carry 3MPa, 16bar and 15MPa - three different units and a range that spans an order of magnitude.
That is not an inconsistency to be tidied up. Acetylene is handled differently from a permanent gas, and the recorded figures reflect what each model was recorded for. It does mean that "acetylene valve" on its own is not a specification, and that an enquiry which does not say which duty it is for cannot be answered precisely.
What to confirm
- The cylinder, in detailAcetylene cylinders are not interchangeable with permanent-gas cylinders. Give the neck thread designation and, if you have it, the cylinder standard it was built to.
- The outlet designation your equipment expectsThe acetylene rows in ANYI's record carry several different outlets, including left-hand threads. A left-hand designation is a safety feature; never substitute a right-hand one because it fits.
- The service pressure, with its unitWrite the unit you mean. Given that our own record holds 3MPa, 16bar and 15MPa across six models, an unqualified number is genuinely ambiguous here.
- The dutyContinuous or intermittent, indoor or site work, single-cylinder or manifolded. These change which recorded model is even a candidate.
- Any existing equipmentRegulators, flashback arrestors and hoses already in service constrain the outlet. Name what is fitted rather than describing it.
What a valve supplier can and cannot answer
One thing this article will not do is tell you how to operate an acetylene installation, and you should be wary of a supplier who offers to. Handling requirements for this gas are set by your own regulations and your own risk assessment, and they are not something a valve catalogue can settle.
What a supplier can do is tell you exactly what the factory record holds for an exact model, what is confirmed, and what would have to be checked. That is the part worth asking for in writing.
Common questions
Why do the recorded pressures vary so much within one medium?
Because the six models were recorded for different duties. A pressure figure is a limit recorded for an exact model, not a property of the gas.
Can I use a valve recorded for another gas if the connection matches?
A matching connection is not a statement of suitability. Material compatibility and the recorded service are separate questions, and both belong to the exact model.
The safety device column is blank on these rows. What does that mean?
It means the factory record holds no entry there. It is a statement about the record, not a statement that a device is absent or unnecessary - ask and we will confirm against the factory.
Cylinder thread, outlet designation, service pressure with its unit, and the duty. That is enough for a first technical reply.
